SHSAT QUESTION??? IS THIS TRUE!!! I NEED ANSWERS NOW!?

ok the test is in 16 more days and I need to know if this is true..

Ok I'm planning to put Stuyvesant as my first choice and bx science as my second but someone told me if you don't make the cut for Stuy but make the cut for bx sci, you won't be able to get into Bronx Science either..and I asked them the reason for it and they said...'; Because a lot of people put bx sci as their first choice so when the schools are looking at the test scores, they don't even look at the people who put stuy first and bx science second, they go straight to the people who put Bronx Science first and select the top scorers for that THEN they look at the scorers (IF they have any seats remaining in bx sci to fill up) and choose the other scorers...';

IS THAT TRUE?? so even if it is..that means someone who got a lower score than me but put bx sci first and make the cut for it has a bigger chance of getting in than me????? even if I HAVE A HIGHER SCORE??

PLEASE, I NEED ANSWERS NOW, CUZ I HAVE TO RE-CONSIDER MY CHOICES!!!! SHSAT QUESTION??? IS THIS TRUE!!! I NEED ANSWERS NOW!?
Hmm... I asked the same question last year when I took the test, and though I don't exactly remember what the answer had been, it had assured me.

Anna may be right, but seriously, if you think about it, it doesn't really make sense. Actually, it doesn't make sense AT ALL.

This is how they do it. So, the graders rank ALL the scores from highest to lowest. So, obviously those with the highest scores get into their top choices (1st choice to 8th) first.

So, Stuyvesant has the highest cut-off score, but what the cut-off score is, is decided by the grades, and not before the grading.

So, suppose Stuyvesant can take 800 students. The top 800 scorers who have Stuy as their first choice will get in. Now, the graders rank these scores from highest to lowest. And the grade of the person who scored that 800th score is the cut-off grade. People who get scores lower than that get into their next choice if they make the cutoff for it.

So now, the same goes for Bronx Science. All the highest scorers who didn't get into Stuyvesant because they were below the cutoff of Stuy will get into Bronx Science if that it is their second choice.

Now, suppose Bronx Science accepts 900 students. So, Stuy takes the top 800 scorers who have it as their first choice.

Bronx will take the next 900 HIGHEST scorers, which includes those who didn't get into their first choice.

Hmm... I don't think my explanation's really working. Let's use examples. So, there's Paul and there's Joe.

Paul, here, has Stuy as his first choice, Bronx as his second, and he gets a 580.

Joe has Bronx first and um... QHSSYC as his second. And Joe gets a 540.

So, Paul doesn't get into Stuy because the cutoff was 585. Now, Paul's second choice is Bronx, and that's where he will go because it's his second choice.

So, when the grading is all done, Bronx's cutoff comes out to be 550.

And now, even though, Joe has Bronx as his first choice, he won't get into Bronx because he's below the cutoff. So, he gets into QHSSYC.

It's simple really.

Hope you understand! And if you don't, either ask if you're curious, or just trust me and don't worry because I know for a fact that what people told you is NOT true.

That's not true. If you don't make Stuyvesant, but have a high enough grade for Bronx Science in relation to everybody else, you're in. Even if Bronx Science had the lowest cutoff, and you chose it last, you would still be accepted if you had a high enough score for it, but too low for every other one.

Edit: Now that I remember, I think Anna is right...
There are a lot of people who want to get into Bronx Science and Stuyvesant, so they go for the people who have it as a first priority. If you have it as a second choice, you're at a disadvantage because they'll only be looking at you after they fill in the seats for those who had it as a first choice AND that there are available seats left.

If someone got a lower score then you but put it as a first choice? They probably will have a better chance because that high school was their first choice, and not yours. If you had a high enough score to get into your second choice but didn't, its because the seats were filled by those who had it as a first priority, when you only had it second. :)

So if you REALLY want to get into a school, put it first, or else someone else might take your seat!!!
